On May 1st, various institutes from Mumbai competed in a basketball field day competition organized by Hoops India. The ‘Mumbai Basketball Field Day’ was an energetic skills competition, testing players on layups, passing, defense, fundamentals, and teamwork. The winning team was a group of boys and girls from the Dhirubhai Ambani International School.
The event lasted 3-hours and featured 4 different skill games in which each player from each team competed. For the past month, Hoops India has been conducting bi-weekly workshops to train and prepare these young players, and others, on the fundamentals of basketball. For this competition, each team had 16 players, consisting of boys and girls ages 9-14.
The Dhirubhai Ambani International School, led by legendary coach Ismero Figueiredo, were victorious. “Today was a special day. The event was terrific. Usually events are just games, but we’ve never seen any competition for the kids which focuses on skills and fundamentals. The games were great, The kids loved it. It seems all the basics and layups which I’ve taught them has paid off today,” Ismero said.
Along with Figueiredo, special guests included former international player and Borivali coach, Thomas Fernandes, and Arjuna award winner and Indian basketball legend, Abbas Moontasir. Moontasir said, “Fantastic event. The fundamentals were made to be fun. The most encouraging thing was the excitement of the kids. They seem energized, and hopefully they will continue to improve their game and most importantly just come out and play.”
“Throughout our workshops we strive to put the fun in these basketball fundamentals, especially for the players 15 and under. Today, there was a lot of excitement from the Ecole school, great teamwork and spirit from the Borivali team, and of course the Ambani school performed super well and embodied camaraderie and sportsmanship throughout. Lots of sweat, high fives, and well played basketball today by these kids. We will definitely see some stars rise from these camps,” said Neel Pahlajani, Hoops India.
Lastly, speaking of sweat, Gatorade was the official sports drink sponsor, and sent a master trainer to educate the players on the importance of hydration.
